What are the peanut butter makers doing messing around with berries? Making jam, that's what – but we don't call it jam because it hasn't got enough sugar. What it has got though, is boysenberries! Glen, from Tasman Bay Berries, grows boysenberries. Lots of boysenberries. In fact, Nelson is the boysenberry centre of the Universe. Glensfarm is just down the road from Pic's Peanut Butter World in the heart of Stoke. We are super lucky and get to eat them fresh in December; it's a Kiwi tradition of packing ice cream tubs full of juicy pick-your-own berries. But the rest of the world hardly ever sees them, which is a pity as they are extraordinarily nutritious and boysenberries go really well with peanut butter. What is in Pic's Boysenberry jelly? Boysenberry puree (grown in Nelson) 49%, Boysenberry concentrate 3%, cane sugar, lemon juice concentrate, gelling agent (pectin). -

You should be able to buy these lovely 380g glass jars at any shop anywhere in the world, but you can't do it just yet. New Zealand's good, Australia and Singapore are well on the way, but you'd have a bit of a journey to get one at a shop in a lot of other places. So until your corner store gets these babies on their shelf, you can get them from us. Unfortunately it will cost you a bit, but once you have one, you can show it to the folks who run your local shop, tell them why they need to get it, and promise to be their most regular customer. That way, when we get around to calling on them, they'll be pumped as anything and will order boxes and boxes. And then you, you clever thing, will have all the Pic's you need, right there at your corner store. -

Our smooth is double squished (a technical PB making term) and as a result, comes out of the second grid very hot and warps any ole bits of plastic. So we commissioned our own custom design that is sturdy enough to take the heat our Smooth dishes out. And now it's available for you to buy too! We made our first batches of Almond Butter in 2014, just as the world started going almond crazy. Today’s there’s almond milk, almond cheese, almond shampoo, almond sausages, and goodness knows what else. We’re not saying it’s a trend we started, but we are now helping make almonds hard to get and really expensive. Pic’s Almond Butter contains only almonds, not even a bit of salt to make them go further. We could make ourselves useful by not buying almonds at all, but the little bit of almond butter we made built up such a following that we’ve had to buy all the South Australian almonds we can get our hands-on. Unfortunately, that’s not very much, so if you spot a jar of Pic’s Almond Butter, buy it. It’s rare and it’s absolutely delicious. -

The cashew is a peculiar nut. It grows wild in steamy tropical jungles, dangling from the bottom of a fruit, encased in a nasty toxic shell that is used for making drain cleaners and the like. It roasts and squashes relatively easily and produces a softly textured butter with a slightly sweet flavour. We don’t add anything to our cashew butter and we recommend you keep it on the top shelf away from the kids. It’s more than just moreish and just a teaspoon of it squashes that voice in your head that demands sweet satisfaction. -
